“They’re Just Kids”
‘Oh, take their picture’, said the woman to her bemused husband, ‘I think they’re artists’. ‘Oh, go on’, he shrugged. ‘They’re just kids.’
Austin Kleon referenced Patti Smith’s book “Just Kids” in his book about creativity, “Steal Like An Artist” and I send a lifetime of thankfulness to him for doing so. I scribbled the title of Patti Smith’s book onto my arm, later transferred it to a scrap of paper and eventually, the title made it onto a list of books to check out at the college library.
My relation to Patti Smith has almost become ‘obsessed’. I feel so left out on this lifestyle she possessed in her early years before her career even started! Especially with her companion Robert Mapplethorpe who is an absolutely beautiful photographer and creative genius.
Reading her biography inspired me to perceive things differently, take chances/opportunities and overall – dream larger, even if the dream is living on nothing, meeting strangers and owning an entirely thrifted wardrobe.
So I camped out with my sketchbook and doodled the self-portrait by Patti Smith as I pondered the possibilities of my own future.
Do you know of any other human beings I should be aware of?
